Not just another day, but the birthday of the Father of Nation – Mahatma Gandhi, 2nd October 2011. The Oberoi Mall, Goregoan was abuzz with cycles. It was 7:30 a.m. and Cycle2Serve’11, cycling rally was all set to take off. More than 150 people participated in the event.

Cycle2Serve’11 was Tarang’s initiative. Tarang NGO in association with Standard Chartered Bank, KIPL, Poonam Couriers and Rashmi Foods were the official sponsor of the cycling rally. The purpose of the rally was to spread awareness and raise funds for the education of the underprivileged children of our society. With no frills and fanfare, the rally was flagged off and made rounds in the slowly waking up neighborhood of Goregoan.

Incidentally, it was also the beginning of the Joy of Giving Week. It was the sheer involvement of volunteers and participation of supporters of the cause that made the event a success. To highlight the cause of the rally, the event had a powerful message-centric skit, shouting slogans around the Goregoan alleyways, and speeches made by the organizers.

The rally gathered quite an attention, with passersby getting some hand outs and some locals inquiring about the purpose of the rally. The event wrapped up with the usual thanksgivings and distribution of certificates. The event was to support the NGO Tarang’s mission – to educate each and every child of the planet. It was a noble attempt and an impactful event organized to support the cause of education of our little ones especially the lesser privileged ones.

Christmas celebration was the first joyful event for children from our powai slum coaching center to showcase their talents. It was full of joy and happiness. We were falling short of chairs as it was attended by more than 250 people. Children were ready to perform with full enthusiasm, they were so much motivated by our center incharge P K Mishra and Sarita mishra that we all could see that now nothing can stop them to set fire on the stage. We had lot many dance performances followed a speech from one the student. The auditorium was full of shouts, cheers, smiles and claps. How can we forget Mr. Bhavdeep Pandya, our dear santa. He gave lots of chocolates to everybody and made everyone smile.

We gave gifts to all the children followed by delicious food and the credit goes to Mr. Arvind. The efforts done by P K Mishra, Sarita Mishra, Deepa Bala , Bhupendra shah were outstanding. This was just a trailer, the story is yet to begin.

The very first event of Tarang which involved a talent contest among night school students to explore their hidden potential. Two night schools participated in this event, Samarth night school and Sane Guruji night school. Almost 30 children participated in the program. Children performed. Gifts were distributed to all the students who Prticipated in program. There was a Drawing competiton where we chose three students and they were given prizes for winning. Felicitation of previous year 10th passed students was also done to motivate them to study further. We also gave sports equipments worth Rs. 7000 to both the night schools.

Event was very successful and it created a very impactful awareness about night schools amongst others. Fabulous comparing was done by Choudhary sir and Abhijeet and the decoration done by young engineering student Swati and her team members was very eye catching. Food and Gifts played a vital role for childrens happiness and it was possible only due to our members Rajendra Makwana and Bhavdeep Pandya. All the implementations were done by Rishi Modi and Amit Thanvi who really worked hard to make it a huge success. So the credit of this huge success goes to our Tarang team whose mission to give education to each and every poor child on this planet.

At Tarang, we believe in working hard and partying harder. While imparting quality education is our main motto, we also ensure children have their share of fun. This is precisely why a fun picnic was organized for night school kids. It was organized to celebrate Friendship’s Day with them.

Basic idea of picnic came to our mind when we were teaching kids in our Powai center and they asked “Beach kya hota hai?” They not even knew the world outside the slum and thats what made the picnic happen. The kids were treated to several city destinations like the Bandra-Worli Sea link, The Gateway of India, The Tarapore Aquarium and Nehru Planetarium. Their happiness knew no bounds! They were elated to say the least. A ‘picnic’ like this is a dream come true for slum children. It gives them a world of happiness and joy.

We booked two buses to accommodate about 130 children. We picked up food stuff like samosas, food packets and water bottles too. We had over 15 volunteers assisting us. Each volunteer was assigned a certain lot of children to take care of. Specific name tags were pinned on their clothes.

We distributed samosas, Frootis and chocolates to kids. They were absolutely delighted and thrilled. We headed to the Gateway of India via the Sea Link so that students could catch a glimpse of the architectural marvel. We then headed to the Nehru Planetarium. Kids had a fun time to say the least. We later proceeded to Mac Donalds at Cross Road to treat the kids to burgers and icecreams.
Such picnics are great morale boosters. They inspire kids to study together in harmony. Picnics promote mutual love and team spirit in kids. We achieved all this and more when we organized the picnic to Gateway of India and other destinations in South Mumbai.

Education is the key to success, period. Tarang has committed itself to providing education to the needy and under-privileged. Empowering minds with quality education is our motto. We are working on numerous projects to promote night school education. Project ‘Food Seva’ is one of them.

We kick-started ‘Food Seva’ to ensure each and every child was well fed. Proper nutrition is the need of the hour! Young children cannot put through the day on empty stomachs. We can’t expect them to focus on studies without adequate food. Incidentally, lack of food facilities is one of the major reasons behind poor attendance in night schools. Thankfully, food seva proved to be highly effective in addressing this issue. It motivated children to come forward to study. It inspired them to give their best shot at education.

Young children need to be nourished, nurtured and pampered. Young minds are impressionable. They can do wonders with appropriate education and guidance at the right age. Food Seva witnessed dramatic success – it boosted attendance in night schools dramatically.

The prevalence of malnutrition in India is a serious concern. Malnourished children are naturally unable to reach their full potential – mentally and physically. The downtrodden do not have access to quality food, education and other resources. They struggle to earn a livelihood. Food Seva comes into the scenario here. Proper food and education will help the less fortunate stand on their feet. It will make them self-sufficient and self-reliant. We have achieved remarkable results, and we hope to do better.

A crash course was also conducted for two of our night schools – Samarth Night School and Saneguruji Night School. A variety of subjects were covered in a period of 7 days. The idea was to improve SSC level education. The results were nothing short of phenomenal. We achieved 100 % success.

The credit goes to Siddhesh Jaitapkar and his team for discharging their responsibilities diligently. They did a great job of generating keen interest in SSC students. Students felt inspired to study. In fact, ever since the crash course was introduced, the attendance in our night schools shot up. Students showed active participation and involvement in the crash course. They attended classes with renewed zest and enthusiasm. We were actually surprised by the outcome.

Moreover, there was an increasing demand for the crash course. Students demanded the course be held more often. This motivated us to conduct more courses and cover more subjects.
The mission was accomplished. The crash course was highly effective in boosting the pass percentage. The crash course was introduced to improve the pass percentage of SSC results. It did just that – students received effective training and guidance which helped them perform exceptionally well. The core committee meets on a regular basis to brainstorm possibilities and discuss upcoming events.

Tarang’s curriculum not only focuses on education but on the overall development of kids. We regularly review our curriculum to ensure it facilitates overall growth and development in kids. We make sure we organize a host of activities and events to make education fun for children. Children’s Day was celebrated with this perspective in mind. Kids were made to feel exceptionally special and loved. To say that they thoroughly enjoyed the event would be an understatement. It was celebrated with great gusto and fanfare.

We know to arouse interest and curiosity in children. After all, it is the only way to generate interest in education. We had quite a few competitions including essay writing, extempore and speech. Kids showed tremendous interest, joy and excitement. They exhibited heightened enthusiasm. They participated wholeheartedly and enthusiastically in each and every event. Some of them spoke exceptionally well – it actually came as a surprise to us. They could beautifully express their emotions through essay writing and extempore.

The purpose of the program was successfully accomplished by Vandana Shah and Sarita Mishra. This event made kids feel comfortable in their skin. It made them feel confident and self-assured. They were highly motivated and inspired. They got a chance to exhibit their creativity and enhance their skills.

Consistent interaction with children made us realize how talented and creative they are. We were pleasantly surprised to know that. Hence, we decided to organize a talent contest for them. It was conducted by enthusiastic IIT powai students who created enjoyable activities for children. We all wanted to bring their creativity to the fore. We had quite a few competitions organized – drawing competition, speech competition, antakshari, etc. This has definitely been one of Tarang’s most successful events. In fact, it is a milestone achievement for the people of Tarang.

The kids were hyper excited and elated. They actively participated in all the competitions. It truly brought out the best in them. We were actually amazed by their talent and energy. Incidentally, there lies a huge untapped pool of talent in India. Tarang endeavours to discover this hidden talent through its activities and actions.

The speech competition gave kids a chance to get over their fears and inhibitions. It helped them fight stage fright. It helped them combat stage fear. It made them believe in themselves. As a matter of fact, young kids are usually inhibited and fearful. They are hesitant to try new things. Talent contests give them a platform to express their individuality and creativity.

It was a heart-warming to hear them share their experiences and express their gratitude. Everything was properly managed by Amit , Deepa Nandi and our coordinator Reena. We are looking forward for such joyful activities to explore hidden potential of children.
